Novel high performance LCD: Nematic compensated birefringence mode (NCB-mode) with wide viewing angle and fast response

Abstract

We proposed a novel liquid crystal display mode (Nematic Compensated Birefringence mode: NCB-mode) using a normally-black homogeneous aligned LC cell and a vertical aligned polymerized discotic material (PDM) compensator. Optimization of a LC cell structure and a PDM compensator realized a wide viewing angle range over 160deg and an extremely fast response time less than 5ms.
