For the purpose of reducing grain size and grain size distribution while maintaining intergranular interactions of magnetic grains in CoCrTaNiPt/Cr media, a small amount of oxygen exposure onto a normal NiP and a Co co-precipitated NiP (Co-NiP)/Al-alloy substrates was used. Oxygen exposure was used for the purpose of increasing the density of nucleation sites. The dependence of media microstructure and R/W performance on oxygen exposure and Co concentration was examined. It was found that utilization of exposure of a small amount of oxygen gas onto a normal NiP and Co-NiP/Al-alloy substrates effectively reduced the grain size and its distribution. As a result, media noise was effectively reduced by about 10% and signal to noise ratio was improved by 1 dB.
