Abstract

A new type of Pb-free machinable soft-magnetic stainless steel is developed using titanium carbo-sulfide. Dispersion of Ti carbo-sulfide inclusions yields excellent machinability and the scavenging effect of carbon and sulfur due to thermodynamic stability has good influences on magnetic properties, corrosion resistance and cold-forgeability. A process for manufacturing these steels is also established. These newly developed stainless steels are expected to be used to facilitate machining and improve the functional properties of materials as well as for environmental protection.
