Neutron scattering experiment on U3Pd20Si6 II: Crystalline electric field and spin wave excitations

Abstract

We report the result of an inelastic neutron elastic scattering experiment on U3Pd20Si6. We found a crystalline electric field excitation around 23 meV, indicating localized character of the 5f electrons in U3Pd20Si6. We also observed a sharp peak at dE = 2.8 meV in the magnetic excitation spectra at 7 K, below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature 19 K, which may be attributed to antiferromagnetic spin wave excitations.
