Negative ions were produced by impact of either highly excited krypton Rydberg atoms or slow electrons, ≈ 2.5 eV, on the neutral clusters of CCl4 formed in supersonic nozzle expansion. Negative cluster ions, (CCl4)nCl- (0≤n≤9) and (CCl4)n- (1 ≤n≤ 10), were detected by mass spectrometry; (CCl4)nCl2- and (CCl4)nCCl3- (0≤n≤9) were also observed by electron impact. An estimation of the excess energy generated by the formation of (CCl4)nCl- by Rydberg atom impact indicates that the neutral precursor of (CCl4)nCl- is (CCl4)n+1. In contrast, evaporation of several CCl4 units from a precursor cluster ion is expected in the formation of (CCl4)n-.
