Near-field effect involving photonic bands

Abstract

The relationship between the excitation of photonic bands and the enhancement of local-field intensity is discussed. Using the time reversal symmetry, it is shown that the local field induced by a plane-wave light at a point near the arrayed dielectrics is essentially the same as the optical signal of a light emitted from that point and detected by a remote recorder. For a periodic monolayer of dielectric spheres, a variety of the frequency- and position-dependences of the local field are presented numerically and their origins are discussed in relation to the optical near-field microscopy (SNOM) signals.
