Nascent rotational state distributions of ZnH (X 2Σ+) produced in the reactions of Zn (4 1P1) with simple alkane hydrocarbons

The reactions of Zn(41P1) with CH4, C2H6, C3H8 and C(CH3)4 were studied by employing a laser pump-and-probe technique. The nascent rotational state distributions of ZnH (X 2Σ+, v″ = 0) were determined. The rotational distributions could be approximated by Boltzmann distributions in all cases. The corresponding Boltzmann temperature decreased with the size of the hydrocarbons; 9000 K for CH4, 5000 K for C2H6, 2900 K for C3H8 and 1600 K for C (CH3)4. These distributions were compared with those predicted by a statistical model.
