Nanoparticles with icosahedral symmetry in Cu-based bulk glass former induced by Pd addition

Abstract

The formation of quasicrystalline phase in Cu55Zr30Ti10Pd5 alloy was studied. Devitrification behavior of the alloy on heating was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. On addition of Pd to the Cu60Zr30Ti10 glass former, nucleation and three-dimensional diffusion-controlled growth of Bergmann-type nanoicosahedral particles was observed. Formation of the particles was attributed to the icosahedral coordination around Pd atoms. Addition of Pd also expanded the supercooled liquid region of the Cu-Zr-Ti glassy alloy.
