Abstract

A study was performed on Na adsorption on the Si(111)-(7 × 7) surface. The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used for the purpose. An intriguing contrast modulation, coupled with streaky noise in the STM images, accompanied by monotonic work function drop was found, below the critical coverage of 0.08 monolayer.
