Morphology of resorcinol-formaldehyde gels obtained through ice-templating

Abstract

The morphology of resorcinol-formaldehyde (R-F) cryogels perpared by ice-templating and the cell size of cryogel microhoneycombs (CMH) were investigated. It was found that a well-defined MH morphology can be obtained when RF hydrogels, which have a relatively long tgel are used as the precursor and are frozen before they are throughly aged. It was shown that polygonal fibers and a bundle of partly connected polygonal fibers can also be formed by adjusting the aging time before freezing RF hydrogels. Cell size of CMHs could be controlled independently of their porous properties by changing the immersion rate and freezing temperature. CMHs have controllable micro/meso/macroporosity and can be prepared without the addition of special templates.
