Morphological transition in block copolymer thin films studied by transmission electron microtomography

Abstract

Morphological transition of micro domain structures in block copolymer thin films was studied by transmission electron microtomography(TEMT). A poly(styrene-block-isoprene) (SI), which exhibits cylindrical microphase structure in bulk, showed bicontinuous-like structures immediately after the spin-coating. The film thickness was ca. 100 nm. As the thin film was annealed, the bicontinuous-like structure was transformed first into cylindrical one that lays parallel to the film surface and subsequently into spherical structure with FCC symmetry. The morphological transition was found to depend on film thickness. The mechanism and thickness dependence of the morphological transition of the block copolymer thin films will be discussed at the conference time.
