Monomorph actuator using twinned lithium tetraborate crystals

Abstract

A new type of monomorph actuator has been produced that uses twinned lithium tetraborate, a paraelectric piezo-crystal, to improve the hysteresis and creep in conventional actuators employing ferroelectric materials. Its characteristics have been examined in comparison with other actuators. The piezoelectric constant (d31) for this actuator is derived from measurements and compared with the calculated value.
