Model for multiple ordered phases induced by magnetic field in PrFe4 P12

Abstract

An antiferro-quadrupole interaction model with Γ3 symmetry of localized f-electrons is proposed for describing the multiple ordered phases in skutterudite PrFe4 P12. Ferro-type interactions between the dipoles as well as between certain octupoles are additionally introduced and vanishingly small energy separation of low-lying crystalline electric field (CEF) levels Γ1 and Γ4( 1 ) is assumed. The model reproduces qualitatively the high-field phase that appears only for magnetic field direction (1 1 1), in addition to the low-field phase.
