Abstract
The membrane potential across poly(vinyl chloride) membranes doped with a phthalocyanine-bridged tetrakis(15-crown-5) (CRPcH2) was measured in the presence of alkali-metal chlorides, to elucidate the ion selectivity of the membranes. The membranes showed high K+ ion selectivity over Na+ and Li+ ions. The results were explained in terms of the dimer formation of CRPcH2 in spite of the low concentration in the membrane, arising from the strong tendency of the phthalocyanine residue in CRPcH2 to aggregate.
