The structural and chemical stabilities of single-crystal boron carbide (B4 C) under severe mechanical scratching in air and water were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Amorphous and nanocrystalline B4 C as well as nanostructured boron nitride (BN) were observed in the scratched fragments. Energy-filtered TEM analysis and thermodynamic calculations suggested that the BN nanophase results from the reaction of very small B4 C fragments with nitrogen in the ambience.
