Measurement of masticatory activity by application of PET-MRI registration technique

Abstract

Positron emission tomography and 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG-PET) can be used to quantify the masticatory activity. We tested whether application of PET-magnetic resonance image (MRI) registration would enable more exact quantification. The mean distance between the left sublingual gland on PET and registered MR images was less than the spatial resolution of PET. A standardized uptake ratio of the contralateral lateral pterygoid muscle was the highest among all masticatory muscles during lateral excursions. These results suggest that PET-MRI registration technique is useful in assessing masticatory activity.
