Measurement of contact fracture

Instruments and methods for measuring fracture phenomena caused by contact were outlined. The principal contact and fracture modes were classified and tabulated. The measurement method is selected according to the contact mode and the fracture mode of the measured object. The purpose of the measurement can also be used in selection and is divided into three categories; the evaluation of the contact fracture characteristics of materials, the diagnosis of the contact fracture occurring in the actual machine and the explanation of the fracture mechanism caused by the contact. The methods using the Vickers indenter, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, acoustic emission and scratch testing were discussed. More detail was given of the in-situ observation of the wearing process using scanning electron microscopy which is more useful when diagnosing an actual machine. (H.C.B.)
