Magnetism and magnetoresistance of multilayers with artificial superstructures

Abstract

Novel characteristics of magnetic multilayers are found in their magnetoresistance (MR), which relate closely to the magnetization processes. Results on Fe/Cr and Fe/Mn multilayers are described here. The giant MR effect, firstly found by Baibich et al. have been reproduced in Fe/Cr multilayers. From neutron diffraction measurements, it is confirmed that the MR effect is originated from the antiferromagnetic coupling between Fe layers across a Cr layer. On the other hand, Fe/Mn multilayers show almost no MR effect.
