Abstract

To investigate the competition between antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic interactions in the tetragonal RB2 C2 (R = rare earth), we performed neutron diffraction experiments under magnetic fields up to 10 T. We observed (0, 0, frac(1, 4) ) magnetic reflection at T = 5.4 K only in the phase between 2.25 T {less-than or slanted equal to} H {less-than or slanted equal to} 3.25 T, indicating that the magnetic unit cell in the phase is a × a × 4 c.
