Abstract
To investigate the hard magnetic properties of rapidly quenched Sm//2 Co//1 //7 -type multi-element alloy ribbons, Sm//2 (Co//1- //x Fe//x )//1 //7 (0 less than equivalent to x less than equivalent to 0. 5) and Sm//2 (Co//1- //x Mnx)//1 //7 (0 less than equivalent to x less than equivalent to 0. 25) alloy ribbons were fabricated under various conditions. The effects of the third element on the hard magnetic properties and structure of these alloy ribbons were examined. An increase in the value of initial coercivity was found at high roll velocities (V//R ). The maximum value of inertial coercivity was found to be about 7 kOe for Sm-Co-Mn alloy ribbons and about 2 kOe for Sm-Co-Fe alloy ribbons. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that an ordered Sm//2 Co//1 //7 phase was formed at low V//R , while a single disordered Sm//2 Co//1 //7 phase (TbCu//7 -type) was formed at high V//R .
