Magnetic properties of the Lu2Fe17-xSix single crystals

Abstract

Si solubility extends up to x = 3.4 in the Lu2Fe 17-xSix solid solutions. The Si atoms substitute the Fe ones on the 6g and 12k positions, the other Fe sites are Si-free, the lattice parameters of hexagonal crystal structure decrease with increasing Si content. The anti-ferromagnetism in Lu2Fe17 at elevated temperatures is suppressed, all the solid solutions are ferromagnetic and the Curie temperature increases up to 470K at the solubility limit. The easy-plane type of magnetic anisotropy is preserved for all the solid solutions. The Fe magnetic moment and the magnetic anisotropy energy decrease with Si substitution.
