Abstract
We have investigated the magnetic properties of Mn-Ir/Ni-Fe multilayers with various buffer layer materials. The (111) textures of Mn-Ir/Ni-Fe are obtained in the samples containing Ta or Zr buffers. However, all samples where Mn-Ir films were deposited on Ni-Fe films exhibit high H ex, regardless of the (111) preferred orientation of the Mn-Ir films. The samples which show high H ex have the epitaxial tendencies and the large grain of the Mn-Ir film at the interface of the Mn-Ir/Ni-Fe. It is concluded that the exchange anisotropy is not related to the (111) texture of the Mn-Ir films, but related to the grain size of Mn-Ir film and the morphology at the interface between the Mn-Ir and the Ni-Fe layers.
