Abstract

We have studied magnetic anisotropies of Fe atoms on the platinum(1 1 1) surface, employing a fully relativistic pseudopotential and planewave method. We investigated two coverages for the Fe monolayer; the full coverage and the half coverage. The effect of surface relaxation has been included. For both cases, it was found that the magnetic easy axis of system is within the surface plane. In case of the half coverage, the magnetic anisotropy energies are comparable to the value of bulk alloy and the magnetic easy axis is directed to the alignment of Fe atoms.
