Magnetic and transport properties of Yb4Rh7Ge 6 and Yb4Ir7Ge6

Abstract

Results of the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat of single crystal Yb4Rh 7Ge6 and polycrystal Yb4Ir7Ge 6 are presented. Yb4Rh7Ge6 and Yb4Ir7Ge6 which crystallize in the cubic U 4Re7Si6-type structure are metal and show paramagnetic behavior with the effective magnetic moments close to those of the free Yb3+ ion in the temperature range between 1.2 and 300K. At low temperatures, the values of the Sommerfeld coefficient estimated for Yb 4Rh7Ge6 and Yb4Ir7Ge 6 are the same degree as that of the non-magnetic references Lu 4Rh7Ge6 and Lu4Ir7Ge 6, respectively. The logarithmic increase of the electrical resistivity is absent in all temperature ranges. Yb4Rh 7Ge6 and Yb4Ir7Ge6 are suggested to be not classified as heavy-fermion Kondo systems. Based on the results of the analysis of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, it was observed that the field dependence of the magnetization up to 5T at low temperatures is well reproduced by a character of the doublet ground state.
