Low-temperature synthesis of (La,Sm)2CuO4 with the T′-structure from molten hydroxides

Abstract

Well-crystallized bulk samples of La2-xSmxCuO4 have been successfully synthesized by the direct precipitation from the molten KOH/NaOH eutectic mixture at 350 °C. The samples with the Nd2CuO4-type(T′) structure have been obtained for 0.3 ≦ x ≦ 2. On the other hand, the samples synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction method at 900 °C have the T′-structure for 1 ≦ x ≦ 2. These results indicate that the phase with the T′-structure becomes stable at low temperatures. The sample of T′-La1.5Sm0.5CuO4 annealed at 635 °C for 150 h in vacuum, however, has shown no superconductivity.
