The mechanism for the tunneling electron-induced chemical reaction of benzene molecules on Cu(110) was examined. The increase in the height of benzene molecule by 40% was detected with the dosing of tunneling electrons of the energy 2-5 eV from the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip to the molecule. For the negative sample voltage up to 5 eV, no increase of the reaction yield was observed. The results show a sharp rise of the reaction probability at the sample bias voltage at 2.4 V, which saturates at 3.0 V.
