Light-harvesting function of β -carotene inside carbon nanotubes explored by femtosecond absorption spectroscopy

Abstract

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) encapsulating β -carotene are attractive components for enhancing optical functionalities of SWCNTs. We have investigated ultrafast dynamics of light-harvesting function of β -carotene. The relaxation kinetics of β -carotene is faster in SWCNTs than in nonpolar solvent. The absorbance change due to SWCNTs increases with the encapsulation because of excited energy transfer from β -carotene. The energy transfer rates from the 1 Bu+1 and 2 Ag-1 excited states of β -carotene to SWCNTs are determined to be (50 fs)-1 and (6.6 ps)-1, respectively.
