Abstract

Laser-rf double-resonance spectroscopy of i183, an isotope of the most refractory element, has been carried out using an Ar-ion sputtering atomic-beam source; the same technique has been applied to i181, another highly refractory element. Hyperfine-interaction constants for the 5d46s2 5D2 state in i183 and the ground state 5d36s2 4F3/2 in i181 have been determined with an order of magnitude better precision than achieved for these refractory elements.
