Abstract
Experiments to achieve the pellet implosion and thermonuclear neutron production were performed by using a 3 nsec (FWHM) 10. 6 mu m laser pulse (10**1**4 w/cm**2). Pellet compression of ablative mode and neutron yield of 10**3 were achieved. The crater formation on the surface of target plasma was observed with both interferometric and scattered light measurements. The absorption ratio of the laser light is 30% similar 50%. The experimental results for fast ion energy measurements suggest that the ions are accelerated by the ambipolar electric field.
