The authors wish to express their sincere thanks to Dr. H. Hiraoka of IBM Almaden Research Center and Dr. N. Ikeda of Osaka University for their discussion. Thanks are also due to Leonix Co. Ltd. for permitting us for the use of Lumonics Hyper 400 ex-timer laser. The present work is partly supported by a Grant-in-Aid from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (63 104007, 636 125 10, 63430003).

N2 - Time-resolved fluorescence spectra of poly (N-vinylcarbazole) films were measured, following laser ablation, by a streak camera system. Two kinds of excimer fluorescence, a broad plasma-like emission, and the emission due to C2 and CN radicals were observed, and their temporal characteristics determined. Ablation dynamics can be interpreted in terms of non-linear photochemical processes, involving S1-S1 annihilation.
