Large softening of acoustic phonons in PrOs4 Sb12

Inelastic neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction experiments were carried out to study the dynamics of the crystal lattice of PrOs4 Sb12, in which the rattling motion of Pr ions has been inferred. A transverse acoustic phonon propagating along the cubic [0 1 1] axis exhibits large softening by about 30% from 300 to 10 K. Temperature dependence of the phonon intensity is quite close to that based on the Debye-Waller factor for the Pr ions. This fact indicates that the mode with the characteristic softening is dominated by the Pr-ion vibration.
