Large collectivity of 34Mg

The highly neutron-rich nucleus 34Mg has been studied via Coulomb excitation using a radioactive 34Mg beam at 44.9 MeV/nucleon with a Pb target. The B(E2; 0g.s.+ → 21+) value for the previously proposed 21+ state in 34Mg was determined for the first time to be 631(126) e2 fm4. This value corresponds to the quadrupole deformation parameter β2 of 0.58(6), implying an anomalously large deformation of 34Mg.
