Abstract

A numerical analysis is carried out of laminar free convection of air and transformer oil in vertical parallel plates and circular tubes with uniform wall temperature, including the temperature dependence of all physical properties of the fluids. Free convection characteristics with variable fluid properties can be normalized to agree with those with constant fluid properties when the wall temperature is taken as the reference temperature for evaluating the fluid properties. A new characteristic length is also proposed for correlating the average Nusselt numbers generally for ducts of different cross-sectional shapes.
