We have developed a wide-viewing-angle polarizer which enables to improve viewing angle and contrast ratio of LCDs. We have also developed a new method to solve viewing angle problem of LCDs by employing a new liquid crystal modes, optimizing retardation film and compensating the change of effective angle between two polarizers in oblique direction. Fundamental concept of the optimization and the compensation methods are described.
