Abstract
Based on the interface structures and their evolution kinetics, the interfacial reactions of solid Co and solid Fe with liquid Al are considered to be controlled by different mechanisms. In contrast to the non-homogeneous and dramatic reaction between Fe and liquid Al, the reaction between Co and liquid Al is homogeneous and more modest. Co loses the thickness with a linear law with respect to immersion time, and interfacial reaction is controlled by the dissolution of the intermetallic compound. Fe samples lose their thickness with a parabolic law, and the controlling mechanism of interfacial reaction is the inter-diffusion within FeAl 2.8.
