Intelligent operating point control system for a continuous-flow artificial heart

Abstract

An intelligent control system has been developed that consists of a state point estimator, a command generator and a PID controller for a motor-driven centrifugal pump used as a ventricular assist device (VAD). During in-vitro tests using a mock circuit with a pulsatile-pump, this system could carry out the regulatory control for the target state point and recover the control from an abnormal state within an appropriate time.
