The 4d absorption spectra for a series of Ce metal, CeF3 and CeO2 compounds were measured in the energy range from 100 to 115 eV. The drastic change in the multiplet structures due to the transitions of the type 4d104fN to 4d94fN+1 were observed in CeO2. Their origin is considered to be due to the change in valence of cerium, and the tetravalent configuration (4f0) appeared largely in the spectra of CeO2.
