Infrared spectroscopic study on the dye containing LB films

Abstract

We have studied the structures of the blue-shifted H- and the red-shifted J-bands formed in the mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of the merocyanine dye (MS)-arachidic acid (C20)-n-octadecane (AL18) with the molar mixing ratio [MS]:[C20]:[AL18]=1:2:x (0≦x≦5). The mobility of the alkyl chain of MS has been investigated as a function of the molar mixing ratio x by means of infrared spectroscopy. The results have indicated that the J-aggregate is accompanied by the thermal motion of the alkyl chain of MS, while the H-aggregate is accompanied by the highly packed state of the alkyl chains of MS and deuterated AL18 (AL 18-d).
