Abstract

The influence of Ni and Co on devitrification and properties of Cu 60Zr30Ti10 metallic glass is studied in the present work. Bulk and ribbon samples of Cu60-xMxZr 30Ti10 (at.%) (M=Ni and Co) alloys were obtained by copper mould casting and melt spinning technique, respectively. The studied glassy alloys showed high compressive fraction strength. Small additions of Ni and Co significantly increase supercooled liquid region of the Cu60Zr 30Ti10 metallic glass. Devitrification of the Cu 60-xMxZr30Ti10 (at.%) ribbon samples was studied in details. Ni addition drastically changes devitrification behaviour of the Cu60Zr30Ti10 when the Ni content is above 3.75 at.%. Cu60Zr30Ti10 and Cu57.5Zr30Ti10Ni2.5 metallic glasses devitrify from the supercooled liquid with low energy barrier for nucleation while devitrification of the alloys containing more than 3.75 at.% Ni or Co proceeds with high energy barrier for nucleation. DSC curves exhibit a single strong exothermic peak at Ni content of 5-60 at.%. In these alloys oC68 (Cu,Ni)10(Zr,Ti)7 phase (solid solution of Ni and Ti in the equilibrium Aba2 Cu10Zr7) is formed.
