Indirect exchange coupling through nonmagnetic metal spacers in Co/X/Gd multilayers (X = Cu and Y)

Abstract

We have investigated the magnetic coupling between ferromagnetic layers through nonmagnetic metal (NM) spacers, in Co/X/Gd (X = Cu and Y) multilayers. The effective NM thickness (tNM) dependence of the indirect exchange coupling is identical for X = Cu and Y and can be described by the relationship t-nNM with n = 5 ± 1.
