Abstract
We have investigated the indirect exchange coupling between Co and Gd across nonmagnetic interlayers in Co/X/Gd/X multilayers (X=Ag, Au and W). The strength of the coupling JCo-Gd decreases with increasing the interlayer thickness /x for all Xs. However, the manner of the decrease depends strongly on X: JCo-Gd decreases slowly for X=Ag and Au, and the coupling remains even for tx≥10 Å. On the other hand, JCo-Gd shows a drastic decrease for X=W, and the coupling disappears for tx≥5 Å. The origin for the difference is attributable to the electronic structures of interlayers.
