Improvement of fatigue strength of duralumin plate with a hole by a cavitating jet

Abstract

Mechanical surface modification using a cavitating jet can be applied for improvement of fatigue strength of metallic materials. This surface modification is called as "cavitation peening". In the present paper, in order to investigate peening effect of geometry of target, fatigue strength of the plate with a hole was evaluated using a plate bending fatigue test. Tested specimen was made of duralumin. The residual stress of the specimen was measured by an X-ray diffraction method. It was revealed that the cavitating jet introduced compressive residua] stress inner wall surface and improved the fatigue strength of 3 8%.
