The transient response of a central crack in a finite soft ferromagnetic elastic strip is investigated. The crack is excited by tractions suddenly applied on the crack surfaces and the solid is permeated by a uniform magnetostatic field normal to the crack surfaces. Governing equations and jump conditions are reduced to a singular integral equation in a Laplace transform plane. Solution of the singular integral equation is expressed in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials. Numerical values on the dynamic stress intensity factor are obtained and the results are graphed to display the effect of the magnetic field.
