IMAGE ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURE DEFECTS IN ALLOYS.

    Abstract

    High-voltage, high-resolution images are analyzed with the use of a computer-aided image processing system. Many-beam images of Au-26at. % Cd alloy with incommensurate superstructures are processed with the Fourier transformation, and the incommensurate periodicity and the basic hcp cells are clearly revealed in the processed images. Autocorrelation functions of the images of partially ordered Au-Mn alloys containing 20. 7 and 22. 6at. % Mn are obtained. It is indicated that the partially ordered structure consists of small ordered domains of the DO//2//2 structure with out-of-phase configurations. The results demonstrate that the image processing is quite useful to analyze the atomic arrangements of incommensurate structure and imperfectly ordered structure of alloys.
