High Nb containing TiAl alloys by high-energy ball milling and pressureless sintering

Abstract

High Nb containing TiAl alloys were prepared by high-energy ball milling and pressureless sintering from Ti-45Al-9(Nb, B, W, Y) prealloyed powder with big particle size. The results showed that the compactibility and sintering densification of the prealloyed powder could be promoted efficiently by high-energy ball milling. After the prealloyed powder was milled for 60 minutes and subsequently sintered at 1500°C for 2 hours, high Nb containing TiAl alloys with high density and fine fully lamellar microstructure could be obtained and were found to have good temperature mechanical properties with the compressive strength of 3150 MPa and the relative compressive ratio of 25.2%.
