The performance of a XeCl ring amplifier injection-locked by backward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has been experimentally investigated. High-locking efficiency of 100% and a high-quality beam were successfully obtained by using an SBS mirror. The experimental setup is shown, and the results are described. The extraction efficiency (defined as the output energy with SBS divided by that without SBS) was 51%. This indicates that a high extraction efficiency of 85% could be obtained by a slight modification of the experimental arrangement. This system could be continuously tuned over the excimer bandwidth with a high locking efficiency by using a narrow-linewidth dye laser system.
