N2 - The occurrence of a field-induced transition is reported for the first time in a ferrimagnetic heavy-rare-earth R2 T17 compound with easy-axis anisotropy. At 40 T, a transition occurs in Er2 Co17 from the collinear ferrimagnetic structure to a canted structure and, with increasing field, the forced-ferromagnetic state is gradually approached. The 4f-3d interaction in this compound has separately been investigated by measurement of the free-powder magnetization. The observed magnetic isotherms have been analyzed within a mean-field model, describing the competing interactions in the compound.
