High accurate and low loss current sensing method with novel current path narrowing method for DC-DC converters and its demonstration

Abstract

In this paper, a novel current sensing method with precision sensing resistor for DC-DC converters minimizing additional conduction loss is presented. In the proposed method, conduction loss in sensing resistor is minimized by switching current path connected in parallel. The design methodology for low loss implementation is analyzed from the viewpoint of equivalent resistance of DC-DC converters in comparison with conventional sensing methods. Moreover, prototype 12 V to 1.0 V, 20 A synchronous buck converter with proposed current sensing method is fabricated and demonstrated 0-20 A current sensing with +3.3% gain error.
