Abstract

This report is concerned with the use of guided optical waves for investigating ferroelectric liquid crystals, especially the electroclinic motion in the SmA phase and the switching motion in the SmC* phase. The optical waves are able to probe the molecular orientation and movement of the liquid crystal molecules under alternating electric fields.
