Growth of large grained Nb3Sn polycrystals from Cu-Sn-Nb solutions by top seeded solution growth

Abstract

A large grained polycrystalline mass of Nb3Sn crystals were grown using the top seeded solution growth method with a Cu-Sn flux. If the Cu concentration was appropriate, the growth rate became higher than in the case of a pure Sn flux. The maximum size of the individual crystals after 9 days of growth was about 2 × 2 × 1.5 mm3. The superconducting transition temperatures Tc of the present crystals range between 18.52 and 18.59 K, and the transition width ΔTc was very narrow (minimum transition width ΔTc=0.04 K). Surface microtopographs were also examined using differential interference and/or phase-contrast microscopy.
